This webinar will cover an overview of our native mussels (aka clams), their amazing life cycle, ecological importance, history and status in Wisconsin. It will include where you can find information about what mussels might be in your streams, some basic features for identification, and how to report what you find.

February 3, 2021: Something’s Fishy: What Our Piscine Friends Can Tell Us About Our Streams
During the Biotic Index macroinvertebrate search, WAV volunteers sometimes also find vertebrates- most notably- fish. DNR Biologists will tell us what species we are most likely to find in our streams and what those indicator species might be telling us about our streams.

February 17, 2021: Comparing Motivations and Actions of Stream Monitors around the World
Former coordinator of the Wisconsin Water Action Volunteers Program, Kris Stepenuck and her University of Vermont Graduate Student will share their research findings regarding volunteer motivations and actions from stream monitoring programs in Canada, New Zealand, and Chesapeake Bay, and compare and contrast to Wisconsin’s WAV volunteers.

March 3, 2021: Water Action Volunteers Data: Where it’s Stored and How it’s Used
Statewide WAV Coordinator, Peggy Compton will give a brief overview of what happens to your WAV (volunteer-collected) data after you enter it into the online database. Dave Bolha, DNR Water Quality Biologist will then share examples of how baseline and nutrient data from the Green Lake Watershed is collected by WAV volunteers and used by the DNR. Hannah Vorrie, also with the DNR will share how the Upper Fox and Wolf River Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) Volunteer Monitoring program is helping track water quality changes following TMDL implementation.
